"She Only Bitches When She
Breathes" by Freddy B.
Review by Matthew Warnock
Rating: 4 Stars (out of 5)
There has long been a tongue in
cheek approach to many of the great country and western songs.
From the early days of the genre up until today’s modern singers
and songwriters, country artists have mixed emotional
songwriting with a subtly comedic approach to lyrics that has
helped the genre grow over time and appeal to a wide audience.
Tennessee based singer-songwriter Freddy B. brings his own
personal approach to the comedy-country genre with his track
“She Only Bitches When She Breathes,” a fun to listen to, and
extremely well performed song that appeals to country fans of
all backgrounds and tastes.
The song starts off with a
classic, country-ballad chord progression that is fingerpicked
on an acoustic guitar. After the first verse the bands cuts
out, followed by solo vocals by Freddy B. and a woman’s voice
“nagging” the singer, which leads into the chorus. Here, the
band jumps in with a hard-drivin’ country groove, complete with
a chickin’ pickin’ guitar solo by two different guitars, one in
the left channel and one in the right. Both guitars are rippin’
through their parts, bringing to mind the great players of the
genre including Jerry Reed, Albert Lee and Brent Mason.
The rest of the song follows this
same format, verse-breakdown-chorus, before climaxing on a
repeated chorus before finishing with the woman nagging the
singer one last time, bringing the song to a final close.
Overall, the song is a well-written, expertly performed country
track that will stick in the listener’s ears for the rest of the
day after hearing it. Though the lyrics may be offensive to
some people, if one can get beyond that element of the song it
is a great country track that one can’t help but tap their toe
to.
